We’ve been sitting on this song for a long time. Not because it wasn’t finished – it’s been mixed and mastered since March – but because we kept waiting for the perfect moment. A full album ready. A year of content lined up. A plan where everything happened in the right order.
Life never made room for that plan, so the single got bumped, and bumped again. The thing we finally understood is that doing things in the best order isn’t always possible. Sometimes you do them in any order and end up somewhere forward. So here it is. Getting it out feels like being back on track.
Jas wrote the lyrics, so the meaning of the song is his to explain. In his words:
Living Days is about not being true to yourself. The white lies. The things you hide to save face. The painful conversation you keep putting off because it’s easier not to have it. I’ve learned the hard way that if you string those things out, the outcome is always worse than the conversation would have been. We all have demons. This song is about dragging them into the light as soon as you can, rather than burying them and letting your own head punish you for it – because it will, and it’s far crueller than the truth would have been.
It isn’t about one moment. It’s about relationships I stayed in too long because ignoring it was easier than facing it. And it’s about me – I don’t always speak my mind. I hide behind being easy to get on with instead of saying the difficult thing that’s actually the right thing to say. I’m working on that. This song is part of working on it.
Jas Morris
Josiah Manning had a huge hand in it. The original idea had a similar feel, but he brought the chorus progression that gave it a beginning, a middle and an end. Jas heard it, thought it sounded fantastic, and blasted the vocal over the top – the melody came fast after that. Josiah also played the ambient guitar parts you can hear plucking away in the verses. He’s a brilliant rhythm player, and this is as much his record as ours. Playing it live is the best.
One more thing. Look at the artwork next to One Thing, Ego and Burns Like The Sun. Every single we’ve released is one tile of a bigger picture. Living Days is the bottom-right corner. You’ll see the whole thing when the album’s done.
Living Days is out now. Listen here – then go and have the conversation you’ve been avoiding.
